THE WORKSHOP

Thorn Wood Forge is nestled in the heart of Hinton St George, surrounded by rich English woodland. With the dedicated help from friends and family, we converted the old stable into a fully functioning workshop and sparked life into the forge.

Our purpose is to deliver exceptional, British handcrafted tools designed to endure generations of use connecting people with the natural world.

FOUNDER OF THORN WOOD FORGE & HEAD BLACKSMITH // JOE GARNETT

Making things is an obsession picked up from my parents. It is something I have always done, almost regardless of the material. I first started leather-working at 15 and quickly became obsessed by the drive for perfection.

My love of making combined with my passion for the outdoors led me to bushcraft, where a life-long fascination with our relationship with nature drove me to delve deep into the study of living in the outdoors.

The self-sufficiency and everyday use of tools in bushcraft introduced me to blacksmithing. I made my first knife in my parent’s garage using a simple gas forge and produced my very first cutting tool. I have spent the subsequent 10 years working for other smiths as a general blacksmith, developing my forging skills and applying them to my passion for tool making.

My aim is simple; Create the best products possible by combining traditional techniques with contemporary materials creating companions to be passed down from one generation to another.
