Overview

A 2 day experience at Thorn Wood Forge crafting your own bespoke Axe from start to finish.

An Axe is historically man’s most important tool, dating back as far as 8000BC. It’s one of the most versatile and useful tools you could own, so why not learn to forge one yourself?!

The course will take you through every step in making your own German pattern axe from start to finish. You will be hosted by a team of 2 Blacksmiths, who will take you through the processes of forging, heat-treating, grinding and hafting an axe, before going through some axe skills with your newly crafted tool. - No previous experience required.

Our aim is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to not only make the tools, but also how to use them on your adventures.

Spaces on the course are limited to max 6 people to achieve a 3:1 ratio of students to instructors. This allows for maximum contact time with the professional blacksmiths, so that you get the most out the time spent here at the workshop.

Course overview:

Day 1:

The day kicks off at 09.30 with teas and coffees while you are introduced to the estate and the Thorn Wood Forge team. Following that, we will get straight on with our axe project! We start by forging the eye before moving onto shaping the blade, with the Forge team guiding you every step of the way! We will break half-way through the day for lunch, and by the end of the first day, all the forging will be done and you will have an axe shaped block of steel.

Day 2:
The second day starts off at 09.30 with heat-treating the axes. This is where they turn from an axe shaped piece of steel into an axe! Following this the blades are ground to a sharp edge and it is almost ready to use! The final step is handling the axe. Handle blanks are provided, made in-house out of ash, from you which you can shape the handle to your preference and fit it to your axe head. The final part of the day is a short axe skills session so that you can go on, confident in using your axe safely. Day 2 will finish at 16.30.
